Heritage on our Doorstep
How to use this website
Mobile
The mobile version of this site includes an audio description reader, so you can follow a suggested walking route, and have the captions read to you whilst you are exploring the heritage sites.
If you choose to wear headphones whilst exploring our city, please be mindful of the safety and comfort of yourselves and others when crossing roads and walking in crowded areas.
This website has been designed to allow you to explore the heritage sites we have researched within our square mile — whether you are a pupil, local, visitor or teacher. You can explore the map to see what is around you, or follow through each time period and be taken through historical events relating to our heritage sites by our project historian Claire Driver.
There are a number of walking routes highlighted that allow you to walk around the Colchester town and explore sites related to one of our topics or time periods. The majority of the sites are free to visit and look at. Some of the points on the map show locations of a historical site that no longer exists.
Colchester Castle, part of Colchester and Ipswich Museums who we have partnered with on this project, holds lots of historical artefacts that have been found within our One Square Mile. The Castle is paid entry. Find out more CImuseums.org.
If you are a school, or teacher, you can download our lesson plans, and resource packs either via the time periods, or as a group download on our resource page, and use our map and images as a resource in your lessons.
